M-Disc: For Archival Storage

On This Page: What is M-Disc? / Permanent Storage / High Capacity

TheM-Discis a huge advance in archival storage for digital data. This Disc differs from standard DVDs in that instead of writing data to a layer that is composed of organic dyes inside the disc (that will degrade over time), M-Disc etches your data into a ceramic-like material that will not break down, even over extremely long periods of time.

The organic dyes used in standard and Blu-ray DVDs are not permanent - according to the National Archives, standard discs can only be considered reliable for periods of 2 - 5 years. Under most conditions, they will, of course, last longer than that, but the statement indicates the problem: the dye layer degrades with time, and data is irretrievably lost.

The great thing about M-Disc technology is that not only is it permanent (they state that it will last for centuries without data loss), but the discs can be read on standard DVD and Blu-ray disc players.

The DVD version of M-Disc can store up to 4.7 GB of data. The Blu-ray versions come in three capacities: 25 GB, 50 GB, and 100 GB. We can store your irreplaceable photographic memories on standard DVDs, or, for an extra charge, on the appropriate capacity M-Disc. Then, you can be certain that the images you have stored will be available virtually forever, with no worries about degradation.
